An Iron Hook and an Unstoppable Spirit
Born in Bohemia in 1823, Roezl was passionate about plants from a young age. However, early in his career, a horrific accident with a cutting machine cost him his right arm. Where others might have retired, Roezl simply fitted an iron hook in place of his missing hand and set off into the wild, untamed rainforests of South and Central America.
Behind the Adventurer: Personal & Family Life
Despite his legendary exploits, Roezl led a solitary life fully dedicated to botany. Spending nearly 40 years constantly traveling across dangerous terrains, he never married or settled down to build a conventional family. However, passion for plants ran deep in his bloodline. His nephew, Frank Roezl, inherited this green thumb and accompanied Benedict on many dangerous jungle expeditions in the Americas, serving as his trusted companion and managing plant nurseries.
Scaring Away Bandits in the Jungle
Trekking through uncharted territory, Roezl faced venomous snakes, harsh climates, and tropical diseases. But his most famous encounter occurred when a gang of heavily armed bandits ambushed him deep in the forest.
Instead of panicking, Roezl raised his gleaming iron hook into the air and began screaming wild, terrifying chants. Believing he was a madman possessed by dark supernatural powers, the stunned bandits fled into the woods in sheer terror!
Setting the 8-Ton World Record
Roezl’s expeditions were legendary. In a single historic trek, he collected over 8,000 kilograms (8 tons) of rare wild orchids and shipped them across the ocean to Europe. He supplied these botanic treasures primarily to Frederick Sander (known as the "Orchid King"), whose elite clientele included European lords, Austrian emperors, and Russian Czars.

Over his lifetime, Roezl discovered more than 800 plant species. After decades of adventure, he returned to Europe, founded Czechoslovakia's very first botanical journal (Flora), and wrote extensively about his travels. Today, a grand bronze statue stands in Charles Square, Prague—depicting the fearless adventurer holding a delicate orchid flower in one hand and his historic iron hook in the other.
